Question: Can you rename a DynamoDB table?

Answer

No. DynamoDB does not support renaming a table in place. Create another table with the desired name, copy or restore the data, and switch the application's configuration to the new resource.

For a point-in-time copy, restore an on-demand backup or use point-in-time recovery. An S3 export followed by import is another option, especially when you need to transform data. Managed S3 import creates a new table and does not support LSIs, so check your index requirements before choosing it.

A copy is not a live rename. Writes arriving after the backup or export point will not automatically appear in the new table. Pause writes for a planned cutover or implement a tested change-capture migration that catches up before traffic moves.

Review IAM policies, table ARNs, indexes, Streams consumers, TTL, backups, encryption and capacity settings. Some settings are not carried over by restore, and external integrations may still refer to the old ARN.

Verify reads, writes and record counts before retiring the old table. If infrastructure as code owns it, update that configuration too. See copying DynamoDB tables and backup and restore.
