Question: Can QuickSight read DynamoDB?

Answer

Yes. QuickSight can analyze DynamoDB data through Amazon Athena federation or a reporting copy in S3 or Redshift. The documented Athena route uses an Athena data source, not a direct DynamoDB dataset connection.

For federated access:

1. Deploy the Amazon Athena DynamoDB connector and give its role permission to read the required tables.
2. Register the catalog and verify a SQL query in Athena. Check how nested attributes and inconsistent item shapes map to columns.
3. Authorize QuickSight to use Athena, the query-result and spill buckets, and the connector's Lambda function.
4. Create an Athena dataset in QuickSight, select the catalog or use custom SQL, and choose the supported import or query mode for your report.

Federation reads the operational table. Broad dashboard queries can consume DynamoDB read capacity as well as Athena and Lambda resources. A filter that appears selective in SQL does not guarantee a cheap DynamoDB key lookup.

For recurring analytics, export to S3 and query a prepared dataset, or use DynamoDB's zero-ETL integration with Redshift. That reporting copy has its own refresh delay. Choose freshness requirements before promising a live dashboard; a SPICE import also needs a refresh schedule.
